Middenduin - Nature
The Middenduin nature area lies on the eastern side of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, between Overveen, Bloemendaal and Santpoort-Zuid. This varied dune area of around 90 hectares is a wonderful place for a peaceful walk through ancient inner dunes, woodlands, grasslands, heath, dune valleys and small pools.
What can you expect in Middenduin?
- Varied dune landscape: Middenduin is one of the older parts of the Dutch dune landscape. Instead of high, bare coastal dunes, you mainly find wooded inner dunes here, with deciduous woodland, shrubs, open grasslands and sheltered valleys.
- Peaceful walking area: The area is smaller than some other parts of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, but thanks to the differences in height and winding paths, it feels surprisingly spacious. This makes it a pleasant place for anyone who wants to walk quietly, a little further away from the bustle of the coast.
- Beautiful viewpoints: During a walk, you pass rolling sandy hills, open spaces and higher dune tops. From some points, you have lovely views over the surrounding dune landscape and, on clear days, even towards Haarlem.
- Rich nature: Middenduin is home to roe deer, woodpeckers, nuthatches, buzzards and various songbirds. In the flower-rich dune valleys, butterflies, dragonflies and special plants can also be seen in spring and summer.
- Highland cattle: Highland cattle graze in parts of Middenduin. These large grazers help keep the landscape open and varied. Feel free to admire them from a distance, but always keep plenty of space and do not feed the animals.
- Connection with country estates: Middenduin connects beautifully with the green surroundings of Overveen. From estates such as Elswout and Duinlust, walking routes lead towards the dune area, making it easy to extend your walk.
A surprisingly peaceful nature experience
Middenduin is ideal for walkers who enjoy variety, silence and a natural dune landscape. Thanks to the combination of woodland, open dunes, small bodies of water and differences in height, every walk feels slightly different. Especially early in the morning or towards evening, there is a good chance of hearing birds singing or seeing roe deer dart away between the shrubs.
