Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen - Nature

The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen near Zandvoort are among the most beautiful walking areas on the Dutch coast. This extensive nature area lies between Zandvoort and Noordwijk and covers around 3,400 hectares. For more than 170 years, this special dune landscape has played an important role in the drinking water supply of Amsterdam.
What can you expect in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen?
- Extensive dune landscape: Walk through a varied landscape with sandy hills, dune valleys, woodland, open plains, canals and water features.
- Roaming off the paths: What makes the area special is that in large parts of it you are also allowed to walk off the paths. This makes a walk through the dunes feel extra adventurous and free.
- Spotting fallow deer: The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen are known for their many fallow deer. There is a good chance you will encounter them during a walk, sometimes even from close by.
- Rich nature: Besides fallow deer, the area is home to foxes, roe deer, pine martens, birds, dragonflies and butterflies. In autumn, there are also striking numbers of mushrooms to be found.
- For walkers only: Cycling is not allowed in the area. As a result, many places feel peaceful and unspoilt, even though Zandvoort, the beach and the boulevard are close by.
- Water extraction and nature: The area is managed by Waternet and beautifully shows how nature management and drinking water extraction can go hand in hand.
A wonderful walking area in every season
The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen are worth visiting all year round. In spring, nature comes to life, in summer the dunes are wide and green, in autumn the rutting season of the fallow deer is a special experience, and in winter the quiet dune landscape has a rugged charm.
