Fort Island IJmuiden is located at the mouth of the North Sea and is part of the 'Stelling van Amsterdam' (Defense line of Amsterdam). This Island Fort was built around 1885 and acted as a key defense post of the city gate. The beautiful, half underground fort is the largest one and is a UNESCO site. In World War II, the Fort Island was part of the 'Atlantikwall' Atlantic Wall), which explains the presence of the later built bunkers.
