Midden-Herenduin - Nature
The Midden-Herenduin is a peaceful and varied dune area between Santpoort-Noord and Driehuis. The area is part of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park and is a wonderful place for anyone who wants to walk through dunes, woods, open plains and sheltered valleys.
What can you expect in Midden-Herenduin?
- Varied dune landscape: In the Midden-Herenduin, high dunes, sandy plains, grasslands, woods and dune valleys alternate. As a result, every walk feels different.
- Part of a large nature area: Together with Duin en Kruidberg and the Heerenduinen, Midden-Herenduin is part of around 1,100 hectares of dune area managed by Natuurmonumenten. The entire Zuid-Kennemerland National Park covers approximately 3,800 hectares.
- Wild animals: During a walk, you may suddenly come across Scottish Highland cattle, Konik horses or fallow deer. Birds of prey are also regularly seen above the open dune landscape.
- Beautiful walking routes: The area is especially popular with walkers who want to avoid the crowds. The marked routes lead along unpaved dune paths, past woodland edges and over hilly sections with fine views towards the dunes and sometimes even the North Sea.
- Different in every season: In spring, flowers and young plants add colour to the dunes. In summer, the open landscape is beautifully dry and spacious, while in autumn the woods provide warm colours and an atmospheric walking environment.
- Traces from the Second World War: Remains of the Atlantic Wall, the German defensive line from the Second World War, can still be found in the area. Along the experience route Duinen vertellen oorlogsverhalen, you discover remains of bunkers, anti-tank ditches and other defensive works, many of which are partly hidden beneath the sand.
- Podwalk through the past: With the podwalk, the wartime stories of the dune area come back to life. This turns a walk through nature into a journey of discovery through history as well.
A quiet part of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park
The Midden-Herenduin is a lovely destination for nature lovers who enjoy walking in a varied dune landscape. Thanks to the differences in height, quiet paths and historic traces, this area is surprisingly versatile and less busy than some other parts of the coastal dunes.
Practical information
- Parking: The paid Midden-Herenduin car park is located directly by the main entrance.
- Opening times: The nature area is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
- Access: Entry to the area is free. A fee only applies for parking.
- Accessibility: The walking routes mainly consist of unpaved dune paths with height differences and sections of loose sand. This makes the area less suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
